Convenience foods case study – Pigs in Blankets

The Brief

Automate the packing of a range of different pigs in blankets into plastic trays of different quantities, style, orientation and sizes. The machine needs to pack up to 240 PIB’s a minute. The PIB’s are delivered to the machine from 4 automated bacon wrapping machines and the packed trays need to be delivered evenly spaced in single file to a metal detector in the correct orientation ready for shrink wrapping.

The Solution

A pair of twin Delta robot pick and place systems (4 robots in total) with integrated tray dispense and end of line collation system. Each pick and place system consists of a servo driven, continuous motion, infeed conveyor belt with an over track camera system to map out the placement of the PIB’s. The Delta robots pick the PIB’s off this belt, orientate and place them in the trays which are travelling on a parallel, servo driven, continuous motion, flighted conveyor belt. This conveyor is automatically loaded with empty trays from a stack and continues out of the pick and place system to feed the end of line collation system. The collation system takes the full trays delivered from both machines and pitches them evenly in single file onto an outfeed conveyor belt. The PIB’s are picked using pneumatic soft grip fingers and placed into the pockets of the empty trays to a recipe set pattern. Change parts on the tray dispense allow for different trays to be fed onto the flighted conveyor belt which has a single point side guide adjustment to ensure the trays are perfectly positioned to accept the PIB’s. The whole system is designed to be stripped and clean with quick release mechanisms and tool free disassembly.

200R soup filling case study

The Brief
The client approached CWM with a brief to provide them with a filling, sealing and lidding machine suitable for hot soups into ring-lock containers. They were seeking a solution that offered an accurate fill and met food safety/hygiene regulations. Additionally, they wanted a flexible machine that could integrate with other machinery and could handle a range of different packaging formats.

The Solution
CWM designed and manufactured a four-head filling, sealing and lidding rotary machine, built from food-grade non-corrosive materials on a stainless steel box section frame to ensure durability and hygiene standards. For filling purposes, a four-head servo controlled volumetric filling assembly was supplied to provide a clean, accurate fill of soup.
Our client has since bought two additional 200R filling machines, due to the increase in productivity they saw with the first line.
